The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
