A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
