EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
