Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
